The problems that Tony has had fighting alcoholism are well-documented.
And it is a battle that he is determined to win.
So much so, he travels across to Istanbul on a regular basis because there is no Alcoholics Anonymous set-up in Azerbaijan.
Tony explained: “The nearest one is Istanbul and it is important that I make that journey when I can.
“It is important that I mix with people of a like-mind as often as I can. Without those meetings you can drift into a state of mind that you don’t need them.”
"I went to Founder's day in Akron last weekend as I have done every year but two out of the last fourteen. It was no less
a moving experience this year than it was the first time I went back in the 90’s.
My Friend Jerry B. and I were joined by our comrade Mutt who rode up from Florida and the three of us took the back roads north out of Athens County through
Amish country and up into Akron. As I rode through all those small country towns I saw the America that I remember as a boy still alive and well. That feeling of continuity of spirit was a grand
way to start the weekend. Small towns… farms and just plain country roads dancing over the Ohio hills in a ballet of asphalt. It was supposed to rain, but that prediction proved false and it was
beautiful all the way up.
That the recovery experience has not only saved my life but actually made it worth living is undeniable. I would not be here without it… The road of life is not
always smooth, even in recovery, but I know today that there is no travail in my life that a drink or a drug would not make worse. G_d will give us no more than we can handle.
The weekend was filled with fellowship and hope and culminated on Sunday with the motorcade to Dr. Bob and Annie’s grave in the Mt. Peace Cemetery.
Surrounded by friends and fellow travelers speaking the language of the heart fills my soul with a deep feeling of peace and I am ready for more
work."
