SIR Anthony Hopkins has told a group of alcoholics that his chronic addiction to drink was a life-enhancing experience.

In an extraordinary speech to a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Oscar-winning actor said: "I'm glad I'm an alcoholic.

Oh yes, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Obviously, I'm sorry for the hurt I caused people ... but being an alcoholic was an amazing and powerful experience."

However Sir Anthony, who has now been sober for 26 years, also gave the 300 addicts a harrowing and moving account of how much of his life and talent was blighted by his craving for alcohol. By the end of his speech, which was recorded with ...
