TOLEDO -- The Idle Time Club on Genesee Street in East Toledo has been a safe haven for recovering alcoholics since it opened in 1973. Roy Adams, director of Idle Time, says the facility is both a halfway house and meeting spot for people trying to remain sober.

"We have 12 AA meetings a week in this facility, it is a safe haven if you are an alcoholic," Adams said.

But a financial crisis threatens to shutter Idle Time's doors. Adams says the club owes $1,352 on its electric bill and $2,817 on its heating bill. Both could be shut off anyday, forcing the club to close. Pastor Omar Jackson, an Idle Time volunteer, says closing Idle Time would have terrible consequences. "If this place were to close there would be people dying in the street," Pastor Jackson said.

The Orient Group owes its existence to Hurricane Gloria in 1985. A longtime A.A.,M.L., was in danger of being flooded out of her waterfront home and sought refuge at the local Congregational Church's parsonage. While waiting out the storm, she told her pastor of her history. He pleaded with her to start an A.A. meeting in the church.
