This award was established in 1959 to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of alcoholism on a national level. Although such contribution may have been of brief duration, it will have been highly visible and improved national recognition of alcoholism and other drug problems and furthered general understanding that these are treatable and preventable conditions. Recipients include Bill W., Harold Hughes and Betty Ford.

LE PRIX LASKER
En 1951 , le prix Lasker a été décerné aux Alcooliques anonymes. Voici un extrait du texte de la citation : " La American Public Health Association décerne un Lasker Group Award pour 1951 aux Alcooliques anonymes, en reconnaissance de leur approche unique et très efficace de l'alcoolisme, ce problème de santé publique et social vieux comme le monde... En soulignant que l'alcoolisme est une maladie, le stigmate social associé à cette affection en est effacé... Un jour, les historiens reconnaîtront peut-être que les Alcooliques anonymes ont été à l'avant–garde d'une magnifique méthode qui a forgé un nouvel instrument d'action sociale ; une nouvelle thérapie fondée sur l'empathie qui rapproche ceux qui souffrent d'un même mal ; un instrument qui a un potentiel énorme pour les innombrables maux de l'humanité. "
