Jack Baker, 90 of, Phoenix, passed away February 16, 2011. He was born September 1, 1920 in Columbus, GA. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gwen Baker; son, Bradley Chesbro of San Diego, CA; daughter, Eve Chesbro of Tujunga, CA and granddaughter, Kaitlin Gravitt of Tujunga, CA. In 1939, at a very young age, Jack earned a degree in civil engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in civil engineering. In 1947, he earned an MBA from the University of Maryland School of Commerce. He was in active duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1939-1946 serving on a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He rose to the rank of Colonel. He continued active duty in the U.S. Air Force until 1954 and reserve duty through 1964. He was president and chief executive officer of several construction companies in California after the war while not on active duty. In 1970-1973 he created rehabilitation modality and facilities for drug addicts in Yavapai and Maricopa Counties in Arizona. In 1972 he received the Coltrin Memorial Award for his establishment of a long-term therapeutic community at Cornville, Arizona and the North Mountain Hospital facility. Jack was a member of then Gov. Reagan's Alcohol and Drug Recovery Council in California. In that capacity he appeared before Congress in the 1970's as an advocate for drug and alcohol funding. He has volunteered many hours as a mentor and advisor to drug courts in Maricopa County. Jack's sobriety date is October 22, 1955 and he recently celebrated 55 years of continuous sobriety. He was loved and revered by the AA community in the valley and was a years long supporter of Crossroads, a recovery center with four residences in the Phoenix area. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM, Sunday, March 6, 2011, Crossroads West, 7523 N. 35th Ave., Phoenix, AZ, 85051. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crossroads West.
