1960: B.A. in English at Princeton University, NJ
1962: M.A. in English at University of California, Berkeley
1967: M.A. in sociology at University of California, Berkeley
1978: Ph.D. in sociology at University of California, Berkeley
1977-1991: Scientific director and adjunct professor at the Alcohol Research Group in Berkeley, California which is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism as a National Alcohol Research Center.
1991-1998: Vice-President for Research at the Addiction Research Foundation in Toronto, Canada and professor at the University of Toronto.
1998-1999: Visiting Scientist at the National Institute for Alcohol and Drug Research, Oslo, Norway.
1999-2006: Professor and director of the Centre for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs (SORAD) at Stockholm University, Sweden.
2006- Works primarily in Melbourne, Australia. Guest professor in Stockholm.
